Box Elder Bugs

Box Elder Bugs have a black body and distinct red lines on their thorax. They typically inhabit ash, maple, and box elder trees during warmer months but will migrate into homes when winter approaches. Although they do not cause significant structural damage to homes, they can be bothersome due to their tendency to leave droppings. These droppings can be difficult to remove and may stain linens, curtains, and upholstered furniture. It is advisable to take preventive measures to prevent these pests from entering your home.

When planting a box elder tree near your home, opt for a male (non-seed bearing) tree as the “female” trees are more susceptible to box elder bug infestations. Additionally, removing potential hiding spots for these bugs from your property, such as piles of rocks, wooden boards, and leaves, can prevent infestations. If you notice box elder bugs clinging to your exterior walls, a quick solution is to wash them off with a strong stream of water from a hose, as they are vulnerable to drowning.
